C-Shore About
About
The Collaborative for Surgical Health Outcomes, Research, and Equity (C-SHORE) at UCSF is a research collaborative committed to elevating health services research in the perioperative space and dedicated to improving equity in surgical care. Our goal is to empower and inspire the pursuit of improved healthcare value and equity for surgical patients through health services research.
By bringing together faculty, investigators, fellows, residents and students, C-SHORE aims to create a community in which ongoing research is shared, critiqued, refined and improved. We have lectures on critical issues in surgical care, healthcare disparities and health service research. We also have “work-in-progress” sessions for abstracts, upcoming conferences or new projects. Each of these presentations is accompanied by structured feedback intended to strengthen study design, analytic approaches, and interpretation of findings. This process not only enhances individual projects but also fosters rigorous, equity-oriented inquiry in surgical health services research.
Central to C-SHORE’s mission is a commitment to health equity: the program explicitly emphasizes how disparities in access, quality, and outcomes should inform surgical services research. By framing questions around equity, the group encourages investigators to explore not only whether surgical interventions work, but for whom and under what circumstances. In doing so, C-SHORE helps shift the focus from average effects to nuanced understanding of differential impact across patient populations—especially marginalized or underserved groups.
Meetings
The group meets every Thursday from 4 to 5 pm via Zoom, allowing broad accessibility to participants regardless of physical location. An archive of past presentations is also maintained, allowing newer members to engage with historical work and lessons learned.
Leadership
Under the co-leadership of Drs. Tasce Bongiovanni and James Iannuzzi, C-SHORE acts as both a resource and incubator for high-impact surgical outcomes research. Its dual emphasis on methodological rigor and equity alignment positions it as a vital node in UCSF’s broader portfolio of clinical research initiatives, and offers a model for how surgical departments can center justice and excellence simultaneously.
